HEREDITAS MAGAZINE
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS
|
| About Hereditas:
Hereditas is a thrice yearly Catholic magazine of fiction, poetry, essays
and book reviews. Sponsored by Regina Coeli Online Academy, Hereditas
pays a small token amount for fiction and poetry, depending on length.
Writing does not have to be specifically religious, but we especially
encourage Catholic writers and the renaissance of Catholic literature. How to submit a manuscript: You may e-mail (and expect an acknowledgment when it is received), or you may send work by the regular mail. If you do this, enclose sase for what you want back as well as a copy of the work on floppy disk or CD. Longer prose may come by attachment in rtf or in the e-mail itself if you prefer. Short bits and poetry should go in the e-mail. For either type of submission, head the manuscript with your name, address, e-mail address if you have one, phone number and number of words or (in the case of poetry) lines. Please do not send hand written material (unless you are submitting to the Young Writers section). You may introduce yourself in a paragraph or two, but please don't feel obliged to "explain" your manuscript. Good writing explains itself. What to submit. We are looking for short stories, any genre, up to max. 5000 words (but it better be good if it's that long!). Good, clear writing, something to hold the reader's interest, a bit of sparkle - these are what we want. Please avoid sentimentality (and don't kill off all your characters when you run out of ideas). If you have a message, put it into the story - don't preach it. Put in whatever is necessary to tell the story, but please avoid unsavory bits, swearing, graphic improprieties or violence (a good hearty fight scene is fine). Remember that good taste is a part of good writing. Normally poetry should come in batches of no more than three poems or a maximum of around 25-30 lines. Query if you have something longer. Same rules as for prose - good taste and something to say. Young Writers, your work is welcome. If you are 14 years old or under, you may send us short stories (600 - 800 words) and poetry for the Young Writers section. High school students' work is put in with the grownups (see guidelines above). To submit an essay, query first with an outline and proposed word length. We will not have room for personal meditations or analyses of current Church affairs. Think literature, literary history, or biography. We will also consider short book reviews - query first. E-mail submissions to: editor@hereditasmagazine.com Regular submissions: Colleen Drippe' Editor, Hereditas Box 71 Belvue, KS 66407 Revised January 6, 2007, Feast of the Epiphany
